Societal Standards in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Throughout the evolution of the world’s societies, the roles of women seem to act as a reflection of the time period since they set the tones for the next generation. Regardless of their own actions, women generally appear to take on a lower social standing and receive an altered treatment by men. In Mark Twain’s pre-civil war novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, lies a display of how society treats and views women, as well as how they function in their roles, specifically in regards to religion and molding the minds and futures of children. Character analysis of Rat Kiley free essay sample

Fear, death, and depression. These are all weights that can burden one throughout life. Tim O’Brien’s war stories often speak of emotional baggage by describing the person carrying them rather than the burdens themselves. In novel The Things They Carried, the author Tim O’Brien uses the character of Rat Kiley to better illustrate the emotional burdens that the soldiers in the Vietnam War faced. Rat was the platoon’s medic until he went crazy with fear and paranoia. He is very complex, especially when compared to the simple, brute men like Azar, Strunk or Jensen. Rat cares for everyone, not only when they are injured, but also when they are dead. He does this by sending letters to the family of the soldier, hoping to get a response and very rarely receiving one. The fact that he continues these efforts that are rarely noticed shows that he is a very caring character. This kind and hospitable mentality causes the audience to be put in a stage of shock when he goes crazy. The reader just doesn’t expect the â€Å"nice guy† to have horrific things to happen to him. It also expresses that anyone can break, even if he doesn’t deserve it. Rat Kiley is very different from most of the characters and his personality often clashes with the men in platoon. He is not like Azar who is immature and racist. Instead he is kind to all the men, even the ones that don’t like him. Nevertheless, his emotions do get the better of him; but rather than embracing hate and anger, he fights these feelings. He battles them to the brink of insanity. This instability is shown when he kills a baby water buffalo. He doesn’t kill the beast because it was dangerous or injured, but because he felt so much emotion and pain after the death of his best friend Curt Lemon. Tim O’Brien writes of this saying, â€Å"He shot off the tail. He shot away chunks of meat below the ribs† (O’Brien 75) and later says, â€Å"Rat Kiley was crying. He tried to say something, but then cradled his rifle and went off by himself† (O’Brien 76). Unlike Azar who kills the puppy for no reason and feels no remorse, Rat kills the buffalo because of sadness and pain and cries after killing it. The fact that he didn’t want to kill the buffalo shows that he is not a monster, but rather a man trying to fight the monster inside of him. The killing of the water buffalo wasn’t the only thing that showed the effect of the emotional burdens on Rat; rather it was more his stories that showed them. He would often tell stories of how heroic a deceased man in the platoon was to the family members in his letters to them. Many times theses stories were not true. O’Brien speaks of his letters saying, â€Å"Later in the week he would write a long personal letter to the guy’s sister, who would not write back, but for now it was a question of pain†(O’Brien 75). Rat knows he won’t receive a letter back, but he continues to do so. Perhaps it wasn’t just to comfort the family, but more to comfort himself and to cover up the hurt that he felt with loss of every man. Maybe he was just hoping for some interaction with the outside world or felt guilty for every man he didn’t save. Whatever the reason it shows how war can make even the strongest men so desperate and insecure. Another story that showed his instability was the tale of Mary Anne Bell. He claimed it was one-hundred percent true, but everyone knows it’s not. Not to mention it’s extremely creepy. Basically the story is about a girl whose fiance flies her out to Vietnam (which would never happen) and she basically goes crazy because she feels liberated by fighting in the war. At the end of the story she’s wearing a necklace of tongues, sneaking around the jungle. It’s creepy. The fact that Rat believes it’s true and the sheer-madness of the story obviously shows that Kiley has some serious problems in the head. Instead of causing pointless violence, he tries to suppress these problems and burdens by telling these stories. Throughout life one must face many obstacles and pain. The pain, however, rarely lessens. In fact, they usually exacerbate. Likewise, Rat’s burdens get worse, but he continues to move on until finally he snaps. This time it wasn’t like with the buffalo, where he was fine after venting some serious emotion. No, this time it was much worse. He didn’t just break. In this case, he could not be fixed and he was lost. Rat couldn’t just tell a story about how heroic an already dead man was to comfort himself, because this time the soldiers he was distraught about were still alive. He was beginning to imagine what every soldier would look like injured or dead. He had received so much pain from being a medic that he was overflowing and breaking apart under the metaphorical pressure. According to O’Brien â€Å"The strain was too much for him. He couldn’t make the adjustment† (O’Brien 208). This event really shows how powerful and heavy the emotional burdens that the men carried were, because the first time he snapped he was able to recover. However, this time he didn’t recover and he remained in pain and with fear. In fact, the fear was so great he ended up shooting himself in the foot. The audience doesn’t receive any closure on Rat’s pain, leaving the reader to question if Kiley was ever fixed. Yes, he did leave Vietnam safely with only a bullet hole in his foot, but there is no true closure on the subject. The reader is left with a feeling of ambiguity, wondering if he recovered or if the emotions continued to build up until he lost it like Norman Bowker and killed himself. Soldiers of the Vietnam War faced many physical challenges. However, it was the emotional challenges that would affect not only the men but all who interacted with them for years to come. When Kiley lost his mind all the men in his platoon felt sorry for him. They were concerned for him when he killed the buffalo and when he was overcome with paranoia. They had felt the same emotions he was expressing and were relieved when he freed of the war. They were relieved because they knew how hard he had fought not to become a monster. The men believed that Kiley deserved to be free of the emotional burdens of war. When Rat left ‘Nam, they were overcome. Overcome not with fear and pain but with hope. Hope for the future.

How to Write a Learning Contract Determine the abilities required in your desired position. Consider conducting information interviews with someone in the job you seek  and ask questions about exactly what you need to know. By the end of reading this, you should have come to some conclusion. I believe it is not worth hunting alleged Nazi war criminals, anymore. I think that spending tens of millions of pounds, and all the time and effort that goes into it now is worthless now. If they had have done it ten or fifteen years after the war had ended then they would have had much more success. The reason I think it is worthless now is because almost all evidence will have been destroyed after the war ended, and any war criminals from World War II would have done their best to completely hide their background and any evidence they have that they committed war crimes. Also victims that survived concentration camps will not be able to identify a man with absolute certainty that he was the same man that put people to death around fifty years ago, mainly for the simple reason that it was so long ago. Also witnesses may want to blame someone, so they blame the suspect in question, or they want it to be that suspect so much that they believe it was him. Also lots of witnesses are now dead, and the ones who are still alive may have something wrong with them that they cant remember the face or voice of the man who put their friends and family to death. I also think that if they do catch a suspected Nazi war criminal, then he may have something mentally wrong with him. Due to old age the accused might not be able to remember anything, so it would be an unfair trial, because he doesnt have an alibi with which to prove he was not a Nazi war criminal. A suspect may be too old or ill to go to court also, a suspect when found could be dying in their bed with only a few weeks to live and so they would never be able to stand a court trial anyway. These are the main reasons I believe that spending all the time, money and effort is not worth it. I believe it is too late and the suspects will be dying by the time they are found, an example of this is seen in a case where a man called Szymon Serafinowicz, who was accused of being a nazi war criminal. In this case the jury saw Serafinowicz to be unfit to plead to charges of war crimes, because he had dementure, so he couldnt remember anything about where he was at certain times of the war, or what he was doing meaning he wouldnt have an alibi with which to protect himself so the case would have been totally unfair. After being freed he died about 18 months later, so even if he had have been convicted he would have only spent a few months in jail, and would have probably been let out after a couple of weeks to be admitted into hospital. There was no case for this man who was suspected of being in command of police officers who ordered Jews to lay face down in the snow and where then shot, hit childrens heads against tomb stones to kill them, order Jewish families to line up and then shoot them, and he himself was accused of shooting a woman with a child who was running away. In total he was accused ordering 3000 Jews to be killed. If a man like this cant even get a trial then, let alone being convicted is it really likely that another man will get convicted. In another case, the Demjanjuk trial he was convicted of being Ivan the terrible a guard at Treblinka and was accused of putting thousands to death, and torturing some people for the fun of it. He was sentenced to death by hanging, but got released after appealing. The judges decided there was not enough evidence to convict him after all. Five witnesses said under oath that they were certain that Demjajuk was Ivan the terrible, also he couldnt remember where he was or what he was doing at certain times in the war, and it sounded like he was trying to pretend he was at certain places at certain times. It appeared only five outgo twenty survives thought Demjanjuk was Ivan the terrible, and these were the witnesses used in court. If fifteen say it wasnt him and only five say it was him, the chances are that it was not him, even though five witnesses were sure of it, this proves that eye witnesses can not be totally relied upon to identify a man they saw about fifty years ago. This proves to me that it is not worth the bother and money of hunting them down anymore, but if you are not convinced yet I will talk about another trial, the Papon case. The jury heard that Papon should be freed during the trial, because of his advanced age and his medical condition (he suffered from angina). It was heard that even if he were found guilty he would not have to spend another night in jail. He died a few months later, so if he had have been convicted he was still be able to be free and walk about the streets. The war crimes unit did not get a single person convicted, even after all the effort they put in, they found evidence but did not manage to get a single conviction. After looking at all the evidence I really dont think it is worth spending lots of time and effort and millions of pounds to find an old man who will probably be too ill and old to go through a court case, and even if they are fit to go through trial then they probably wont be convicted due to not enough evidence, or unreliable evidence.

The streets become battlegrounds for competing dealers because a particular block or corner can rake in thousands of extra dollars a day. Should drugs be legalized, the price would collapse, and so would the drug-related motivations to commit crime. A pack of cocaine becomes no more dangerous to carry than a pack of cigarettes. The streets would be safer to walk, as criminal drug dealers are pushed from the market. Legalization would also deflate prison overcrowding. Out of 31,346 sentenced prisoners in federal institutions, drug law violators were the largest single category, 9487. By legalizing drugs, there would be no more drug offenders to lock up. Since many drug users would no longer be committing violent or property crimes to pay for their habits, there would be fewer real criminals. This decrease in inmates would bring the overflowing federal prison system down to its rated capacity. The excessive efforts now used against drug activity and drug related-crimes by police would then be put to use more effectively for catching rapists, murderers, and the remaining criminals who commit crimes against people and property. She even violently apposes the idea of Ruth having an abortion because, like the plant, killing one of the family’s members would, in essence, destroy the plant.Mama’s plant is practice for her dream of a home with a garden and a yard. Even her moderate success with the houseplant is enough to convince Mama that she will be a successful gardener. Similarly, her success with her children encourages Mama that her family will continue to be a success, if given the right environment.The plant itself becomes fuel for Mama’s passionate pursuit of her dream for herself and for her family. As the play closes, Mama symbolically returns to the apartment, rescuing the plant its imprisonment there. Chants  can be used to learn vocabulary and grammar and are a lot of fun to use in classes. They are especially effective when used to help students learn problematic forms. These chants are also known as jazz chants and there are a number of great jazz chants books available by Carolyn Graham who has done a great job of introducing her jazz chants to English learners. The chants  on the site cover a wide range of simple grammar and vocabulary subjects for lower level English learners.   English learning chants  use repetition to engage the right side of the brains musical intelligence. The use of multiple intelligences can go a long way to helping students speak English automatically. Here are a number of chants for some of the most common beginning level problem areas. Many of these chants are simple. However, remember that through the use of repetition and having fun together (be as crazy as you like) students will improve their automatic use of the language. Using a chant is pretty straight-forward. The teacher (or leader) stands up in front of the class and chants the lines. Its important to be as rhythmical as possible because these rhythms help the brain during the  learning process. The main idea is to break up a learning objective into small, bite-sized pieces. For example, to practice questions forms you can start with a question word, then on to the simple beginning of a question with the question word, auxiliary verb, followed by the  main verb. In this way, students learn to group chunks of language that often come together. In this case, the pattern of auxiliary verb subject main verb i.e.  do you do, did you go, has she done, etc.   Example of the Beginning of a Chant What What do you do? What do you do in the afternoon? When   When do you go... When do you go to visit your mom?   and so on... Using this form of a chant could also work well for strong collocations such as make and do. Start with the subject, then make or do and then the collocating noun. Example of Make and Do Chant She   She makes   She makes the bed. Through My Eyes :: essays papers

Through My Eyes Part One: I decided to adopt the voice of an African American male to gain a different perspective of my society. Every day I live my life as a white female and perform everyday activities without a second thought. Never do I stop to think what it would be like to be black or disabled in my surroundings. Ever since I was young, I was taught not to discriminate against minorities and not to judge the handicapped. But, never was I taught what it was actually like to be a minority, be homosexual, or be disabled. I can honestly say I am not a racist and that I’m sensitive to the needs of others. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I know what it is like to be a minority or struggle with a disability everyday of my life. This assignment opened my eyes to the wide variety of people within my society and helped me try to understand another person’s perspective in life. To better understand the voice of an African American male, I searched the web for information, interviewed someone with my voice, and pretended to think and act like that voice for one day. The first web site that impacted my previous white female notions was a site entitled BlackFamilies.com. The site contained information pertaining to African American families like current news, family issues, and other happenings. One item that I found particularly interesting was the baby name page. Here, one could view the list of black baby names and even submit their own favorites. As a white female, I have only browsed through â€Å"white† baby name books. I’m aware that many black Americans have names unique to their culture, but I never saw a name book designed specifically for them. Once again, I was only viewing the world through my own eyes and experiences. I’ve always wondered how Blacks â€Å"find† the names of their children since they are usually so unique and different from what I am used to. I also enjoyed reading the names and trying to pronounce them on my own. There were many other links to sights similar to this one, including more black baby names! Secondly, I talked to an African American male who is a student at La Salle University. We discussed what it was like to be a black male on our campus and within the city.

“500 Days Of Summer” Film Essay

Non-verbal communication plays a key role in signifying the status of Tom and Summer’s relationship. Conflict and nonverbal communication are looked into with more depth in interpersonal relationships. In the movie 500 Days of Summer, audiences a lot of nonverbal communication. The movie shows characters Tom Hansen and Summer Finn during their attempts to build a relationship. Tom and Summer’s experiences shows issues such as conflicts within a romantic relationship, and nonverbal communication. In 500 Days of Summer, nonverbal communication signified a great deal between Tom and Summer. One example of nonverbal communication is when Tom reached to hold Summer’s hand in public, but Summer moved her hand quickly away from his, so that they wouldn’t hold hands. Not only was she letting him know she did not want to show affection in front of anyone, but she was stating her loss of interest in him romantically. However, moments such as this were evidence of mixed messages Summer usually showed to Tom. She did keep physical intimacy with him. However, she did not want to publicly establish a romantic relationship with him. Then again nonverbal messages are more easy to change and mean another than verbal meanings. A smile can express comfort or just being happy or smiling because someone else in smiling at you. Another example that of non verbal communication that showed, is when Tom and Summer went to the store and they were flirting with each other and playing the roles if they were all ready living together. The Proxemics in that chosen area gave them the opportunity so show more affection with each other. They had a depiction of the future they could have with one another. To go more into depth they were already a lot of problems that were going on between Tom and Summers relationship. There were many nonverbal cues between Tom and Summer. A lot of problems came in to play when one of them confused or  misinterpreted the others nonverbal communications. All in all, relationships are built upon building blocks of many subjects. In the movie 500 Days of Summer, one can see the nonverbal communication through out the whole movie. People will see Tom and Summer’s example of how relationships are able to form, as well as how relationships can be terminated from the non verbal communication skills with many other communication problems.

Global awareness about education Essay

Education has become the foundation for socio economic development in the 21st century. Awareness in education varies with each state and continent, South Asia as a region is home to a mass of illiteracy with some 412 million illiterate adults while the situation in Europe or North America is completely opposite. But in order for us to make these estimates we have to keep in mind the definition of a literate person. Literate person is defined as one who can write a simple letter and read a mere newspaper but then again, there is no mechanism to confirm the credentials of a person who claims to be literate. AWARENESS IN PAKISTANI SOCIETY Pakistan’s illiteracy rate remains not only alarming, but concerning too, as over the years it has failed to make a noticeable improvement and still remains at 57%. 25 million children are currently out of school while 3 million have never seen the inside of a classroom. Only a small percentage of individuals exist, and those too from the elite class who afford high grade private education while the majority have never even joined school. The conditions in the rural areas are the worst as the people are not aware of the benefits and the government’s impotency only encourages this. Lack of education only gives rise to other issues such as a higher crime rate; failure to improve the percentage of women educated also keeps them not only suppressed but more prone to domestic violence. Under the 18th amendment, the government re-emphasizes the importance of education but seized to make such a difference. To summarize, it is lack of opportunity and will that serves as a barrier to education and literacy.
